In “Cricket’s Field of Dreams: Queer Racial Identifications in Joseph O’Neill’s Netherland,” Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction 55 (2014): 341–357, John Duvall contends that the inter-ethnic, homosocial relationship Hans and Chuck forge in the cricket field moves the post 9/11 novel beyond narratives of traumatized males in mid-life crisis and encourages readers to re-examine the notion of national community from the standpoint of the limits and exclusions this formation produces.
